The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) announces the organization of the first preparatory meeting for the UAE participation in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) to be held in Geneva, Switzerland from 14-18 May 2012. This preparatory meeting is set to take place in the TRA’s Dubai office on the 21 December 2011.
Representatives from several governmental federal entities were invited to attend the meeting which will be inaugurated with a welcoming speech from H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA Director General and Head of the UAE WSIS National Committee.
Commenting on the meeting, H.E. Al Ghanim, said: “The WSIS forum is a great opportunity for us to view others’ experiments in the ICT field and benefit from them, as it provides a forum for exchanging views and experiences. The importance of our participation emerges from being a leading country, not only on a regional level, on a global scale, due to the industry-best state-of-the-art approach adopted by the UAE. In addition to the development and advancement of these practices to suit our society, and to provide our users with an optimum experience.”
“We left a significant impression from our participation in last year’s forum; we are working hard to offer more, and to benefit more from the experiments of our counterparts in the WSIS. In this regard, I would like to note that we always strive for a better ICT future in which users in the UAE are guiding us through user-demand approached to help us deliver the best product and service offering,” Al Ghanim added.
Following the welcoming speech, the participants in the meeting will be briefed about the objectives of the National WSIS Committee, and its future visions, in addition to highlighting the work guidelines of the WSIS and its role in the UAE. The National WSIS Committee was established by the Minister’s Council Resolution No. 28 of 2009 in implementation of the WSIS recommendations and guidelines; it is headed by the TRA Director General.
The meeting will also review the UAE participation in the WSIS 2011. Its role in the last forum is considered an important reference for the current committee. This will be followed by panel discussions on the plan for the upcoming WSIS 2012, the mechanisms and ways to enrich the UAE’s involvement, the main guidelines on which the UAE participation is based, and the means that enable the delegation to represent the country in the best possible manner.
