Mobilk - Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) launched “Your SIM Your Responsibility” campaign on the 10th of July 2016, in a move to raise awareness to risks of mobile SIM-card misuse and the importance of having people protect themselves.
“It can’t be emphasized more strongly; people need to register their SIM cards, they need to know how many SIM cards are in their name and who is using it.” Says Mrs. Taiba Al Binali, TRA’s Acting Director of Consumer Affairs and Media “The legal and financial risks you put yourself in by not taking these precautions are serious, and you can be held accountable for them. Keep a close eye on the campaign to learn more about how to stay safe from SIM related fraud.”
Consumers are asked to ensure that SIM-cards, without their knowledge, are not registered in their name with the licensed mobile operators in addition to not sharing their SIMs with other people in order to avoid being held accountable. The campaign will also encourage residents and visitors to cancel any SIM-cards registered in their names in case they leave the country permanently to avoid misuse such as identity theft, fraud, or avoidable financial obligations.
The campaign follows a regulation for SIM-card registration which was issued during the end of last year as a step to protect consumer interests. To learn more about how to protect yourself from SIM-card fraud and SIM card related dangers, dial 81188 or refer to TRA’s website www.tra.bh
