Mobilk - Ooredoo announced that 70 per cent of its network across Oman has now been updated as part of its focused modernisation strategy which commenced three years ago. The announcement comes just prior to the popular Khareef Festival in Salalah, where Ooredoo has deployed additional 2G,3G+ and 4G sites to give visitors wider coverage, and improved mobile data speeds and voice quality.
All Ooredoo base stations across Salalah, from Mirbat to Mugsayl, have been upgraded to provide almost two times more 3G+ capacity in addition to the already turbocharged network. This will ensure Ooredoo customers get high speed data access and a superior internet browsing experience both indoors and outdoors.
In the festival grounds, customers with 4.5G capable handsets on the Ooredoo network will experience the new LTE Advanced service giving 4.5G with high speeds.
The additional investment in the network will be further complemented with Ooredoo’s new festival stand which will greet visitors in a more visible location, at double the size. The new site enables Ooredoo to this year welcome more visitors each day and demonstrate products and services in a more engaging way.
Some background about the Ooredoo network:
In mid-Oct 2012, the company’s 3G+ network covered 53% of Oman. Today this figure stands at 92%. 4G is now widely available in the cities of Muscat, Salalah, Sohar and Duqm. The 4G mobile broadband services now cover over 30% of the population of the Sultanate. Home Broadband is also an area of significant achievement. The older modem access of Wi-Max has been upgraded to 4G LTE TD with full migration of customers expected to be on the new service by end of August this year.
As part of the 2015 network upgrades this year, the Wilayats of Manah, Al Hamra, Izki, Adam, Bahla, remaining parts of Nizwa, Al Mudaybi, Dima Wattayeen, Bidiyah, Ibra, Al Qabil, Jaalan Bani Bu Ali have already been modernised and there will be further roll-outs to many more cities, including Hayma, Hallaniyat, Al Jazir, Thumrait, Khasab, Bukha, Qurayyat and Masirah.
As a result of their widespread upgrades, Ooredoo has seen a significant rise in broadband uptake within turbocharged areas, as customers enjoy the benefits of faster data speeds with higher quality..
