Mobilk - the Kingdom of Bahrain hosted a reception at the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Montbrillant building in Geneva as part of the Kingdom’s continuing campaign for election to the ITU’s Council. Over 250 people from within the international telecommunications and regulatory communities attended the reception and were received by the event speakers; Chairman of the Board of TRA Bahrain, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Alamer and Bahrain’s Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr Yusuf AbdulKarim Bucheeri. The Kingdom also invited Dr. Hamadoun Toure, Secretary-General of the ITU, to say a few words as a guest speaker.
In his statement, Dr. Alamer elaborated “The Kingdom of Bahrain reaffirms its commitment to seeking consensus solutions that affect us all and pave the way forward for an inclusive digital society that empowers all our people. Technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity of life and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that it anticipates and addresses the needs of our future societies. To this end, we believe that the work being done in the ITU, and in other relevant fora, is vital to guiding this collaborative and co-operative strategy.”
Dr Toure recognized Bahrain’s significant contributions to the work of the ITU and stressed that during the work and conferences of the ITU, the Kingdom of Bahrain has continuously played a significant and crucial role in reaching consensus in many difficult and sensitive discussions .
When reached for comment , General Director of TRA Bahrain, Mr. Mohammed Bubashait stated “We are keen on being elected to ITU Council in October, as we firmly believe that the Kingdom of Bahrain will contribute significantly and positively to this important body by building unanimity among our global peers.”
The ITU Council is the executive body of the ITU and manages its activities for a four year term between each Plenipotentiary Conference, one of the highest decision making conferences of the ITU. The Council elections will be held at the next Plenipotentiary Conference which will be held in October in Busan, South Korea.
