Mobilk - His Excellency Eng. Majed Al Mesmar, the Deputy Director General of the Telecommunications sector at the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) and the Chairman of International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2018 (PP-18), received delegates from the United Kingdom (UK) including H.E. Tariq Ahmed, Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs and Lord Henry Ashton, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, on the sidelines of the Conference, which is being hosted by the UAE . The important telecom event will run until 16th November at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
In a meeting with the UK delegation, H.E. Eng. Al Mesmar, discussed the critical issues in the field of information and communications technology (ICT), that were raised during the Conference, including infrastructure, competition, regulation, best practices and innovation. Both parties also discussed about the ways of promoting mutual cooperation in the field.
H.E. Eng. Al Mesmar stated, “UAE is committed to working with the ITU and its members to expedite the use of ICT in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set out by the United Nations (UN).”
He pointed out, “We (UAE) are sparing no efforts to ensure the success of this highly important telecom event. We hope this Conference leads to decisions that contribute to the development of the sector globally and reinforces the role of the telecom sector in serving different economic sectors.”
Delegates from the UK also shared their views and suggestions on how cooperation in the technical field can be fortified between the two countries.
H.E. Eng. Al Mesmar also received H.E. Karol Okonski, the Secretary of State of the Digital Affairs, Republic of Poland. In an official meeting that followed, the two parties
discussed about the proposals that will be presented during the Conference and the possible outcomes and recommendations.
Talking about the role of ITU in achieving the SDGs, H.E. Eng. Al Mesmar highlighted the enormous potential of ICT in the context of e-learning and e-health, e- agriculture, Big data, OTT, Artificial intelligence and the important part that the Union plays in their advancement.
H.E. Aukonski appreciated the efforts of the UAE, thanked Government for hosting the Conference efficiently and praised H.E. Eng. Al Mesmar for leading it with proficiency.
H.E. Eng. Majed Al Mesmar also received at his office H.E. Leonid Yevdochenko, chairman of the board of directors of the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine. The two exchanged views on the most important issues the conference will discuss at its 20th edition.
The chairman of the conference underlined the UAE keenness on boosting cooperation with Ukraine, and welcomed all the proposals and the meetings in the future which galvanized the cooperation. H.E Yavishinko thanked H.E Eng. Majed Al Mesmar for his excellent management to the activities of the big event.
He also appreciated The government and people of the UAE for well hosting the event, and expressed admiration to the great progress the country is witnessing.
