The 36th meeting of the GSM Arab World, the regional representative body of the wireless industry, is meeting in Doha this week, hosted by Qtel.
As part of its ongoing work to drive development, the event is set to bring together leading representatives from across the communications industry to discuss the future of Mobile Broadband services in the Middle East and North Africa. Among the organisations represented at the event are leading regulatory bodies, government institutions, and major operators.
Globally, the GSMA (GSM Association) trade association represents more than 800 mobile operators and 4.2 billion mobile customers.
In its role as the leading communications company in Qatar, Qtel is hosting the event, and is also presenting new research on the potential opportunities presented by mobile Broadband technology.
The Chairman of the GSM Arab World, Abdul Aziz Fakhroo, who is Senior Director for Network Development and Evolution at Qtel, said: “Today, there are more than 60 GSM operators in 22 Arab countries, out of which 50 percent of countries and nearly 33 percent of operators have adopted 3G-broadband networks. The ongoing increase in take-up reflects the importance of this area to the economic and social development of this region.”
Opening the event, Abdulla Zaid Al-Talib, Board Member of Qtel, said: “Mobile Broadband services have the potential to deliver mobility, connectivity and speed to the people of this region, opening new social and commercial opportunities. This is a major responsibility, and one that we must all work hard to live up to.”
“In order to achieve these goals, we all require clear strategies which take into account the commercial, technological, regulatory and innovation requirements that will make Mobile Broadband a success,” he added.
Qtel is one of the region’s leading pioneers in the field of Mobile Broadband. As part of the “Broadband Qatar” strategy, the company has built one of the most advanced networks and continued to add new services for its customers. Qtel is also looking to increase the range of mobile Broadband services it offers across its 17-country regional footprint.
