Repair work on a major Internet service cable has been completed, and Internet traffic across the region is being restored to normal levels, Qtel announced today.
Damage to the cable, which is located in the Mediterranean Sea between Egypt and Italy, caused service disruption for some customers in the GCC region throughout the week, particularly on sites which use a large amount of bandwidth, such as video-sharing sites like YouTube.
However, Qatar has largely been able to avoid serious disruption because of Qtel’s capacity to switch traffic to other cable networks to manage Internet disruption.
With normalization and testing processes now being finalized, Qtel is removing restrictions on the capacity provided to high-bandwidth using sites, which was instituted during the repair process to ensure that essential services could continue.
With normal service being resumed, Qtel has issued a note of thanks for customers’ patience during the repairs.
