Qtel today announced that it will be the Platinum Sponsor for the 17th International Conference in Telecommunications (ICT 2010), the major global event set to be held in Qatar under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, The Heir Apparent.
The major event, which will take place from 5-7 April 2010 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Doha, will bring together technologists and telecommunications experts from around the world to discuss the latest advances in research and development in the telecoms sector.
Among the key areas under discussion will be Wireless Communication; Networking and Internet; Information and Coding Theory and Reconfigurable Computing for Telecommunications. The event will feature a host of distinguished speakers and will see a range of world-class research projects presented for the first time.
Initiated by the Centre for Telecommunications Research, King's College London in 1994, the International Conference in Telecommunications has been held around the world in key technology and commercial hubs including Beijing (China), Cape Town (South Africa) and St. Petersburg (Russia).
The decision to host the event in Qatar marks only the second time that the event has been held in the Middle East, reflecting Qatar’s emergence as a key technology and communications centre of innovation.
Dr. Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel, who will deliver a keynote presentation at the event, said: “Qtel is committed to supporting innovation within the telecommunications industry, and we believe that ICT 2010 will make an important contribution to expanding the depth of research and technological understanding within Qatar.”
Commenting on Qtel’s sponsorship of the conference, Dr. Adnan Abu-Dayya, the General Chairman of ICT2010 and the Executive Director of QUWIC said, “securing Qtel as a lead sponsor for the event clearly demonstrates the commitment that Qtel leadership made to support key R&D events and bring some of the best telecom researchers and visionaries to Doha to share their results and explore what Qatar has to offer”.
Qtel has developed a strong reputation as a pioneer in the regional telecommunications sector, as one of the first companies to introduce innovations like IPTV and MPLS for public use.
In addition, it plays a key role in supporting original research within Qatar, including supporting the work of the QU Wireless Innovations Centre (QUWIC) in its applied research into wireless systems, services, and applications.
Qtel's distinctive research and development strategy looks to continue to discover new technology in partnership with the schools and universities of Qatar.
